The New Wheels. BMW E81......

Post by DannyBoy » Mon Aug 30, 2010 4:39 pm

Hi Folks,

As some of you may know I recently chopped the Z4 (2005 3.0 auto) in for a 1 series diesel. Reason being I could not stand shelling out £55 every fill up for 200miles (22mpg), the price of insurance going up by an extra £30pcm this year and the ridiculous price of road tax! :( The overly firm ride was also a contributing factor. I have had the car roughly 3 years and she never missed a beat apart from a broken rear spring and more lately the window regulator. Got her on 12k and by the time I’d finished she was on 40k. Here she is in all her glory 8) ……

Chopped her in during July and got £10,800 trade px for her which is what I believe she booked at. Her spec for a comparable is 2005 “54” plate, 40k, auto, 18” composite spoke, heated black leather, xenons, wind deflector, multi functional steering wheel, cruise, mirror package and clear light package.

Picked this up during early July, being a 120d M Sport (177bhp), manual, 18 wheels, with comfort pack (heated foldy mirrors, puddle lights and dimming lights etc). Yes the car is filthy and has not been washed since I got it but the hosepipe ban doesn’t help…….

To date I’ve carried out the following mods- Aero Spoiler, mangowalk stubby, remap to 217bhp and as of the weekend DEPO projector angel eyes with 4300k HIDs. Next up is an exhaust, possibly light rear tints and maybe some CSL replicas. Over the past 1500 miles or so the car has returned 42-43mpg which is quite an achievement considering I certainly don’t hand around. Car handles reasonably well albeit slightly “wafty” at the rear end in comparison to the Z4, that said the ride is a lot more comfortable! With the remap the car is swift and probably as swift if not swifter that the 3.0l z4 between 60-110mph.

Couldn’t stand the 1 series when they first arrived in 2004, albeit with time and the development of the bodykit etc they’re quite an attractive proposition IMO today. While it is no sports car it does the job for me and is certainly a lot more refined that the Z4, albeit I do miss that convertible roof! When they release the E89 diesel I’ll be first in the queue!

Thanks for looking folks!

I have to say, I quite like the look of 1 series and even toyed with the idea of the convertible.

Looks good! But surprised you only got 22mpg! I get 31 minimum really :)

3 door one series are more appealing than the new 3 series to me. Quite like the 1 series in all forms, well bar 5 door

Nice. As std it's actually pretty close to the 123d I thought there was more of a power difference. I do prefer the 3 door to the coupe or 5 dr.
