Tar and Glue Remover Accident

Post by Doddsy » Sun Apr 26, 2020 4:37 pm

Just a warning to anybody that hasn't used tar and glue remover before or lives life on the edge like me and doesn't read instructions.

Do not let tar and glue remover drip onto plastics and especially plastic headlights. 1st picture doesn't do it justice to be fair but I saved them. Started with 800 grit sandpaper, then 1500, then 2000, 3000 and Machine polished with megs cutting disc and menzerna 400 compound. Sealed with Meguairs UV Resistant spray sealant for headlights.

Tar and Glue Remover Accident

Strange....did it instantly start eating into the plastic then? The lights typically have a coating, so I guess it was removing that.

Yeah pretty much. At first I thought it was the Soft 99 fusso coating just coming off as I only applied that to the paint a couple of months ago but it wouldn't come out. I sh*t myself, genuinely thought they were passed saving.

Lights are looking good.

Never heard of tar and glue remover before. My daily is covered in the stuff. My Zed gets clean and polished enough so as not to need it.

I would assume petrol as a tar remover would work? Seems to be aggressive enough without dissolving everything..the wimp’s choice is WD40

I’ve used petrol on a rag before to remove petrol and then finished off with a little T cut and polish, it works well.

It was Gtechniq tar and glue remover. Canny strong stuff like. I'm used to breathing in all sorts of crap from work but that stuff was on another level. Might be best to dilute it if I risk using it in the future or apply it to a cloth and not directly to the car.
