I would also be very keen to see if this is possible and be able to make some practical use of the space.

Removing the OE phone mount
Well you're both in luck as it is possible to fit the OE wireless base unit. This requires the removal of the current base with wires to be replaced by the new wireless base and just connecting the new wires up. As stated above you loose the extra direct connection to the system so are only on a Bluetooth connection instead (improved antenna reception is retained), but it gives you a modern charging facility. The design is a little old now compared to the newer larger phones, so you can obtain an extension bracket to increase the sprung retainer.
Cheapest brand new one I've found ...
**EDIT** These are brand new items and at really great prices compared to other sellers. I've fitted one for a customer and now have one myself as well

A cheaper used unit...
Link removed as no longer available
And the extension bracket...

Or if you can 3D print or know a friend who can, here are the STL files for you....

Hope that helps

Removing the OE phone mount
I was thinking to also do a wireless phone charging space but didnt as i couldnt see the screen if i ever needed to use it for maps of something.
I then thought about the wireless charger at the front but the roof buttons as if i did need the screen for any reason its easier to get at than in the arm rest... just my 2 pence..
I ended up getting one of those multimedia boxes from naviks wired in to oem screen and run a hdmi to usb converter to present my phones screen as i usually use google maps to the oem screen and also utilising the naviks box for front and rear reverse cam helps loads as well as using it for audio playback as i didnt have bluetooth playback, but also have tune2air wired in there to utilise steering buttons...
but yeah im sure theres loads of setups out there...

Removing the OE phone mount
Thanks for this guide - will certainly be removing the outdated phone tray.
It seems cupholders divide opinion (and are also tricky to find online) but ideally I’ll try to change to the half storage/half cup holder option for the armrest. Having said that, do those of you with the cupholders in the armrest find them remotely convenient since your elbow goes there?!
Any tips on finding the right parts or is a case of hoping for an eBay special? I’ve seen various oddment bins for sale with part diagrams but no joy on the cup holder version. Lastly, do you know if they’re offered in LHD/RHD variants so that the cupholders will be on the pax side?
Cheers guys!

Many thanks for the info and numbers, guys.
I’ve found this site to be rather useful (https://www.lllparts.co.uk/en/product/o ... 1169181218 ) so may contact them to verify the RHD/LHD config (out of interest Dave, how did you know which was which?) and price up the set with rubber mats too, though might get pricey!

LLLParts is a good site, I've used them a number of times The chances are you'll get a better price than some sellers of used items on eBay Don't forget though that shipping is on top and it'll take between one and three weeks to get them. Oh and you need the long number for their website, then short number won't work.olibattman53 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 7:57 pm Many thanks for the info and numbers, guys.

As for LHD / RHD, I used two web tabs open for RealOEM one set up for LHD and one for RHD and compared them. I'd took guess that there would be a difference and I was right.

Removing the OE phone mount
Probably a stupid question, but here goes...
I don't have phone mount, telephone preparation or bluetooth, just the standard full width oddments tray. I'd been toying with getting a wireless charging base and plug it into the USB socket. I was just worried about the phone rattling around and off the wireless charging base.
I don't suppose it would be feasible to fit the tray for the OE phone mount with BMW wireless charger? I don't expect to have all the wiring to give the antenna boost, but is there the power connection for the phone mount, albeit not doing very much
Cheers!
Andy

I am in the process of doing the conversion from blank tray to full OE phone holder with full connectivity.
When I'm back at my PC I'll post the wiring diagram for the power supply along with the correct socket etc and part numbers etc.
I will be making this into a full video on my YouTube channel, but alas all my videos are delayed at the moment due to available time doing jobs

Thanks Dave,
Looking forward to another one of your brilliant tutorials
Hopefully what I asked made sense - basically I'm wondering if the standard wiring loom on a 2009 35i has the power connection plug for the OE phone installation.
I'm not sure I'm up for a full phone and Bluetooth retrofit, just something that will allow me to keep the phone charged and safely stowed while driving
Cheers!

To the best of my knowledge it won't have the plug already there.acm wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 5:07 pm Thanks Dave,

On the point of an aftermarket wireless charger, the flat pad type I've seen are a rubber type material so if you were to place that in the center console on top of the existing rubber mat then I doubt it would move about very much, if at all.
