What does the BMW star mark look like?
I can’t see anything obvious!

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

It looks like a five pointed star, Ron. They are not usually very big (about 8mm diameter), depending on the manufacturer.

Star markings are only put on tyres that are 'recommended' by BMW. You could have RFTs that are not star marked, if they weren't OEM fitment, or were not 'designed' for BMWs.

I suspect the only thing BMW would ever wangle their way out of claiming non-star'd tyres were a casual factor would be the failure of an X-drive transfer box.

On x drives tyres did chew up the transfer boxes. Not sure if they would disallow gearbox issues

The BMW techie who came out to look at the 335 confirmed this so it is definitely no urban myth !

The invoice specifically states :- fitment of star marked tyres
I would like to see the mark for myself so I will look today!

Sorry, my point was that I 100% agree star marked tyres are needed on an X-drive (and all tread levels kept the same) but they're not hyper-important on any 2 wheel drive BMW[1].

I’m certainly not doubting your opinion in any way!
The techie confirmed the importance. He also mentioned the Wear rate- ie 1.5mm difference between tyres

So my recent high £££ invoice might have been money well spent!

This episode all started when the car went in for a service!
At the Health Check Stage, they showed one of the fronts had two very small bulges on the wall - I just had to have them fit new rubber at vast cost as we needed the car the next day - using the Z4 was not an option unfortunately
I think it’s cost me an extra £200
I would have been cheaper to use a Taxi - but that’s with hindsight!

The three other tyres had 4mm of tread depth and I presume are now in the scrap bin.

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

There was me thinking the star meant they were for night-time use only. :headbang:
