Seiko World Timer

Post by TitanTim » Thu Jul 20, 2023 12:06 pm

Was going to post this in the watches thread but strictly speaking I might struggle with it on the wrist so I don’t think it counts

Just picked up this Seiko World timer clock. I've been after one for a while now but hard to find in perfect condition these days, think they were made mostly in the 70s. This one came up described as mint on ebay so snapped it up. Always loved these clocks but never got around to finding a good one. Most were mounted in the usual upright metal clock case and tended to corrode. This is one is more of a desktop clock.

Basically you have your normal hour handset set for GMT/London as in this case together with an outer hour ring which you set for the country of choice e.g. Paris 1 hour ahead. Once set the hour ring moves in tandem with the hour hand and you can read off the world city times at a glance against London GMT. Quite ingenious yet simple. The second hand has what might possibly be a Boeing 747 which flies around the central world map.

You have to hand to the the Japanese in the 70s.

I'm finding it useful already as it saves me ringing my relatives up in Oz in the middle of the night :)

It’s a bonus when these ‘toys’ we buy and have to justify prove to have some practical use too.
