Z4M tyre size & load rating question

Post by Popey » Sun Jul 30, 2023 5:08 pm

I know it’s been asked before but I can’t find it.

Any advice on changing tyre size on stick z4m 18” rims. I just want more choice and a potential saving too.

I'm running standard 225/45 fronts but 255/45 rears for a bit more sidewall and hopefully comfort instead of the standard 255/40 rears.

They fit fine with no rubbing and fill the arches nicely, but I think next time I'd try to find 265/40s for a similar effect plus a bit more rim protection.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

255 35 18 are cheaper than 255 40 18. Also lowers gearing which is very welcome IMO, at the expense of a little compliance.

Don't see the point of running 225 45 18 at the front when 225 40 18s are considerably cheaper and you won't notice any reduction in comfort. If anything you might notice slightly sharper steering due to the lower profile.

Aren't people always complaining on here how difficult it is to get matching front/rear tyres in non-M 18" tyres?

I run the 225/45r18 and 265/40r18 on my Z4M...but as it's been many years since I actually drove it, or purchased tyres for it, I'm not sure what the current availability is like.

However, looking now, it seems my 265/40r18 is becoming less popular...neither of the below currently available in that size:

GY F1 SS 225/45r18 @ £136

GY F1 SS 255/40r18 @ £180

...or...

Michelin Pilot Sport PS5 225/45r18 @ £136

Michelin Pilot Sport PS5 255/40r18 @ £183

But I will say that decent suspension made more of a difference to my car's comfort levels than any tyre has.

255 35 18 and 225 40 18 are two of the most common sizes, much easier to source than ///M sizes and considerably cheaper as a result.

Found a deal on some MSS but they are rated 88Y load. Would this be ok for the fronts?

So I’ve gone for a set of Goodyear super sports. 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 rear.

Pressure I’m thinking 31 front 32 rears. Lots of conflicting reports on this…

Thank all for the input
