A move to the dark side…..

…… well more the bright side with a speed yellow Boxster S 987 gen 2.

Always fancied a Porsche and after looking at a couple of 996 C4S 911’s decided that a Boxster was more realistic and fingers crossed, less of a money pit. Did consider a Cayman as they look great but much prefer the roof down when hooning so Boxster it was. Also didn’t want the worry about potential IMS/bore scoring, regardless of how over hyped the risk of these failures occurring are, so focused on finding a gen 2 987.

My local Porsche Indie had 3 987.2 Boxster S cars in stock including a superb looking Black Edition but sadly low spec. He also had a speed yellow Boxster in stock which is one of my favourite Porsche colours. Comes with FSH, low mileage, PASM, Bose, electric heated memory seats, climate control, cruise, 19 inch turbo alloys but no PSE or extended leather. Fortunately a previous owner drove the car to Gert in Belgium and had a carnewal GT exhaust installed whilst he waited.

Had the car for 10 days now and just returned from a 230 mile round trip to Betws-y-Coed and the car performed faultlessly. You sit really low down in the car and the handling and grip is impressive with virtually no body roll. Handling and performance is well beyond my shite driving skill levels! My remapped E89 20i auto produced 456Nm of torque and conducted overtaking manoeuvres quickly and effortlessly from low revs whereas the manual Boxster needs to be revved but once above 4000rpm really shifts. The carnewal exhaust really comes awake when the revs hit 4000rpm and sounds awesome taking the whole hooning experience to another level.

So far no regrets with my latest purchase.

Congrats looks nice!
You may well have made the right choice over a 911. I have a friend who had a 987-2 Boxster, then got a 997-2 straight after. He hated the 911 and wished he had never changed from the Boxster.
He has an F82 comp M4 now and still wants another 987.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Some years ago I bought a Cayman because I preferred the shape to the Boxster. I always regretted it because I missed being able to put the top down. So I think you made the correct decision. Stunning looking car.

That looks fantastic! I hope you enjoy many miles in it. I've had Boxster adverts saved in Autotrader for so long now that I really need to take the plunge. No doubt this will encourage me to start browsing again!

You forgot the most important part, is it a manual?

They are really nice cars to drive, I often get them as loaners

Yes it is a manual which in my opinion enhances the whole experience of driving a sports car. My last 4 cars were automatics including 2 Z4’s which I really enjoyed.

Would be interested to know your thoughts on the Boxster and how different it is to your 911.

Fully agree with the manual experience, I have the 7 speed manual gearbox which makes the car pretty unique and adds an infinite amount of pleasure to the driving. You may not be the fastest on the road but you certainly have the enjoyment factor.

My 911 is obviously faster than the Boxster but those are only figures and I only notice that on foreign trips with other Porsches in Germany where you really pull away a lot faster. In the UK that doesn't make any difference on the speed limits here, but this car I drive 90% abroad only and primarily in the Alps.

As my car is a 4 seater, I get a more comfortable position in the car as I can put my seat back further and at more of an incline than I can with a Boxster. If you are comfortable, then that is not an issue of course.

Long distance driving in the 911 I found less tiring than in a Boxster, probably as the engine is further away. Again, not a showstopper but as mentioned, I only drive the car long distance really so the extra comfort is nice to have.

The biggest problem I always have with the loaners is the PDK box as that sucks the enjoyment out of the driving big time, I might as well drive the EV for the same enjoyment level.

For the price bracket and fun factor, a manual Boxster like you have chosen is absolutely perfect for the driving in the UK.

Picture for the fun factor in the Alps when using the gearbox as it was designed (I do like the cheating ref matching feature though in Sport Plus mode)
