Steering, feature or Issue?
The issue seems to have gone away on mine too, it's either a resolved software issue through an updated or as you say a temperature one. Going to cancel my appointment anyway.

On mine it was like a dead zone between -5 and +5 degrees from ahead where the steering wheel had no connection to the wheels, occurring shortly after no steering input, it was like it went to sleep. Then as you went past 5 degrees it would suddenly move. Not a problem on a twisty bit of road where you keep moving the wheel, on a straight bit of road you veered off before catching it.MikeyH wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 11:04 pm I think it was to do with the cogs becoming too tight over time as the grease moved down the column, the solution is to loosen an adjustment ring at the top of the column to give more play. I need to do this myself. It feels as if there is a magnet stopping it turning easily so you keep going backwards and forwards left and right. Zigzagging down the road.

Sorry to say this but this is what happens with e85/86 sticky steeringori wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:54 am Took my car to BMW. Funnily enough weather has cooled and issue has disappeared, but bmw Borehamwood didn’t even bother to investigate at all.
Also still have an issue with the wing mirror squeaking and their solution is for me to take it to another dealer.
Useless idiots and have lost a customer.

That is not safe, could it be faulty software?sars wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 12:39 pmOn mine it was like a dead zone between -5 and +5 degrees from ahead where the steering wheel had no connection to the wheels, occurring shortly after no steering input, it was like it went to sleep. It wasn't unsafe per se, just a little annoying as it's difficult to keep in a straight line without constantly making small corrections. However, it has just gone away like it has just received a software patch :dunno:

Steering, feature or Issue?
I think it’s the temperature dropping that has made the difference. If you go on a really long journey it will come back.
I got called back by the dealership and had an apology.
I had a tech come out and speak to me about another issue and I discussed this with him. He said he will raise it with bmw but he suspects that it’s something within the rack as he says that gets really hot due to bits around it. He seemed to know his stuff (master tech)
As I said, he will open a case with bmw and maybe they know something.

Last Thursday I was driving for about 7.5 hours and Monday for about 4 hours without occurrence.ori wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 9:24 pmI think it’s the temperature dropping that has made the difference. If you go on a really long journey it will come back.

Can’t be a coincidence that the temperature drops and the issue disappears for both of us.sars wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:13 pmLast Thursday I was driving for about 7.5 hours and Monday for about 4 hours without occurrence.ori wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 9:24 pmI think it’s the temperature dropping that has made the difference. Steering, feature or Issue?
Sad to say my issue came back even with low temp. It’s with bmw now. It’s a dead zone around the centre point. Very annoying and as you say on motorway makes it hard to stay in lane with constant corrections.

Steering, feature or Issue?
Week after posting and cancelling the appointment with BMW, the issue also returned for me after two hours of motorway driving, it was a warmish day low 20's. The symptoms were the same but to a lesser degree, I shall wait until my next service.
Hope you have success in getting it solved

It’s still with them and will be with them for another week as they wait for a part (not related)sars wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 5:08 pmWeek after posting and cancelling the appointment with BMW, the issue also returned for me after two hours of motorway driving, it was a warmish day low 20's. I explained the problem to the tech who understood and has sent it to bmw for some info. I did some research myself and on other BMWs where someone has said this exact problem has happened it was a new steering column and rack.

That's what they used to do with the E85. As I said they never learn do they.

Well, just as an update. They still haven’t heard back from
BMW, but as I said it will problem be a steering column and rack if they ever get back to the dealer.
On my separate issue which was a problem with my seat moving under acceleration, they stripped it down and replaced the frame of the seat. Then managed to rip the seat leather when putting it back together. Just one of those things.
Ordered new leather and guess what…::part delivery is 26th December!!!! Now that’s a wait. Even with my bad maths we are looking at over 2 months.

When is your next service? My car is currently with bmw and will stay there probably until Jan while waiting for a part.sars wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 5:08 pmWeek after posting and cancelling the appointment with BMW, the issue also returned for me after two hours of motorway driving, it was a warmish day low 20's. They haven’t even looked at steering issue as without seat they cannot drive it.
