2009 E89 30i Convertible Issue

Post by Admend » Sat Aug 19, 2023 6:43 am

I am currently having an issue with my convertible. Randomly when closing it on a misty night the rear panel failed to close fully and lock into place. A blinking and constant beeping red flashing light would go off. The only way this issue was resolved was by pushing the rear shell in and holding the button down to close the roof, where it struggled to clamp down and lock into place. I tried again to open it the next day and that time the top shell poorly locked into the windshield lock area as well as the rear shell. I do not know where to begin this process. First off, which cheap OBD2 scanner would you recommend to get the proper CVM codes needed to know whats going on? I used to utilize my cousin's iCarly scanner which could read into all BMW modules in my Z4. Second, which do you guys have in mind as to what's causing this issue with the hard top?
Many mechanics around me are not familiar with convertible repairs and the dealer wants 400$ just to diagnose the car.

Symptoms:
Does not properly lock the top shell/ rear shell into place and will poorly lock when pushing the panels in (Sounds like a slow creaking noise by each locking mechanism)
Blinking Red Light on the convertible button with a red convertible image popping up.

This sounds like microswitches to me, do a search as there's plenty on here about them, I am sure someone else will come along and advise.

In the UK they are £20 each and some people do them themselves following an online guide.

Do you know which OBD2 scanner will help determine the location/codes of the faulty microswitches? Do I need an expensive scanner or will any scanner work?

Code readers often say sensor, but usually ends up being a broken wire.

Also, when clearing the code the convertible opened up normally. When closing, the top shell locked into place and the rear shell remained on top. When pressing the button the rear shell would slightly jump up, but then begin to beep and slowly fall back down on top of the top shell. The only way I was able to get the rear shell to close was by pushing hard in the middle once I pressed the "convertible close" button and it struggled but managed to get over the stop point and complete the closing and lock-in.

If it was a broken wire would this process be able to complete? Every time I pressed the button the rear shell would slightly jump up but like I said never get passed the point to close and lock.

Broken wire touches then breaks as the roof starts to move. Looses continuity so system doesn't know status of roof switches.
Can even be hidden in cold or warm weather as wires contract.
Need to look through the forum lots of posts to fix.

What we need and i am as guilty as others, is to list the fault codes and show exactly the problem parts and fix.
Could do with picture of roof and fault codes that come up.

Certainly on the right side of roof both pairs of wires need new splicing in, just use some 5amp mains flex.
I ended up using 13amp flex, all i had lying around.
Otherwise as soon as one wire repaired others will break.
Useless BMW using crap wires.

Hall switch on ram on top roof panel i just laid in a new pair and soldered to the Hall switch having chopped leaving a couple inches of original wire.
I didn't try to remove the old wires.
Just poked the new all the way back to boot.
Some of the old wire i could get at i chopped out.

Does anyone have diagrams/graphs to show the power supply and signal wires in the CVM? I need to test for continuity but idk which wires are for the right side and overall which are the power supply and signal.
