Petrol sloshing around noise?

Post by jamesgarbett » Wed Sep 27, 2023 9:57 pm

Is this normal?
To be able to hear liquid (presumably petrol in the tank) sloshing around - behind the drivers seat
Seems to depend how full the tank is for me
I might have imagined it but seems louder than normal
No other fuel problems or fuel smells

Yes, it’s kinda normal.

But very exceptional your car is so quite you hear petrol sloshing. Mine makes all sorts of sounds, noises and creaks. Good for you !

I don't have that sound or issue with my 2011 e89. My sons e85 did that and it was water in the sill. Had to pull the jack pads off for the water to drain.

As long as it’s not sloshing around inside the cabin…

The fuel tank looks like a pair of buttocks made out of plastic…if there are no external leaks or smell of fuel you’re good…wish I could hear my fuel sloshing..must be an age thing…
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

Likely your drain holes, had the same on mine. Surprising how much water collects when they're blocked.

Had the same in my E85, drain blocked, cleared it, sound disappeared

BMWs (especially convertibles) do like to 'conserve' their water.
I had an F33 440i (not for very long obviously). That was making a sloshing noise when I got it. I drained at least 2 gallons of water out of the two rear wings. It went much better afterwards with the reduced weight!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

F31 320i. Good car.

thanks - where are the drain holes on the E89?
I knew where they were on my E85 and kept them clear of debris

No water in the battery compartment I've checked that

I suppose it could be both sides but as theres only ever me in the car i've only noticed drivers side noise

AFAIK there are no drain holes on E89s but didn’t want to upset the conspiracy theorists… :tumbleweed:

Ha, I missed the whole E89 board thing because I was too busy working on my flat earth diorama. :)
