2007 z4m Battery replacement

Post by Stingerz4m » Sun Oct 01, 2023 3:48 pm

Hi,
Time to replace the battery. I did this once before and it was a real pain due to battery being located deep in the trunk close to the seat. Most bmws are in the trunk but under the matt or on the side and are easy to get to. THis one is actually deep inside the trunk and you cannot see what you are doing. are there any videos or instructions on how to do this. There is a metal cage over the battery and it seems like if I slide the battery in/out, it might short on that cage. having trouble getting the cage out. cant remember how I did it.

ALso, is there a proper order for removing the cables, Normally on vehicles, I remove positive first, but seem to be reading that on the BMW I should remove the ground first.

What about programming the battery? cant find a you tube video for the z4m. the ones I see show a sensor on the negative terminal, but on mine, I see no such sensor.

What things need to be reinitialized after battery installation is complete?

Also, recommendations for a battery for this vehicle?

Thanks in advance.

OK, feel a little stupid at this time, but last night was late and did not have very good lighting. As I look at it this morning, it looks like the battery will slide out underneath that metal bracket without removing it. Looks like the metal bracket is there more for holding in place the decorative pieces that cover and hide the battery.

The remaining questions above are still pertinent.

I would always remove the negative terminal first, and as far as I know the new battery won't need to be coded to the car. Mine certainly didn't and everything worked fine after I fitted the replacement.

I got an Exide AGM battery delivered for £105 from Tayna, but that was in 2021!

No need for AGM battery in a E85/6. No coding/registering required either.

I know but I read on here that an AGM was a better option for a car that wasn't used regularly, and mine is a weekend/special occasion car.

I thought the same and have gone with AGM in the past, but the current non-AGM battery I have is lasting longer. Who knows why!

Not an M but just replaced mine, like for like with a Bosch one as some of the others were a different size. Got it from the Euro car parts shop. No problems this time with resetting stuff. Last time I disconnected the battery to replace the starter motor the windows went funny and the roof kept beeping. A few cycles and all was fine again, no coding either
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

I bought the same battery I had which lasted 5 years. THere is a 3 year warrenty on them. it was a delco EOXIDE PREMIUM AGM. I s**t my pants when they told me the price was $349. I think they are expensive when they are $150.

Last time I checked with BMW first and they gave me its a special battery BS and they wanted $500 to replace it 5 years ago. I can only imagine what it costs now.

The auto parts store told me that I could come in from time to time and ask for the $50 E6 special (E6 was the battery type that went into my car).

He explained that if they have batteries they have not sold in over a year, they pull all the labeling off and sell them as a generic battery for $50. I did not know this, but this is what the auto store told me. Might have to try that in the future. Does not hurt to ask.

Just goes to show the crazy markup they have on these things.
