In America, on my BMWs, I’ve only used the highest octane available at the station in that state.

I wonder what happens with prolonged use of low octane.

That’s way to low an octane rating..need 91 octane at least..depending on what model of Z4 it is..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

I think America uses the MON method of calculating octane rating whilst we use RON which aren't comparable.

US uses AKI measurement. 87 AKI = 91 RON.

Thanks to smorris_12 above and t'Interweb, I now believe that MON 87 in the US = RON 91 in the UK. So, no, I don't use it. Indeed, I don't think you can even buy it in the UK.

I use what BMW recommends: RON 95. Above that is a waste of money.

In the USA where I live, the best gas you can put in your Z4 is Shell V-Power NiTRO+ 93 octane... Costco's Kirkland Signature Premium 91... is also a top-tier https://www.toptiergas.com/certified gasoline and a decent price.

Why not take care of your engine the easy way every time you fill up? What do you think you are saving by putting fuel in that will degrade performance of the engine? Detergent gas that is top tier will also keep the valves cleaner...

Isn't this only for the US and Canada though? Is there something similar in the UK. I know our standard fuel has higher octane but would be good to know if I am using recommended fuels.

UK fuel is standardised..so all 95 RON petrol are pretty similar…

Fuels above 95 RON rating do vary in detergent , consistency and octane ratings but you only need those for E89s that have been tuned to exploit that increased octane rating..
