Windows won't go down

Post by Trish331 » Fri Nov 17, 2023 10:01 am

Hi,

My windows on my '66 Z4 have stopped working using the buttons on the door. They go up and down when the roof is operated. This happened last night.

Kept messing with the buttons. Eventually heard a 'click' and the windows worked. Went to try them this morning and they won't work again.
I have looked in the manual and it says to press the switch 'beyond the resistance point'. I have tried everything and they still won't work. :headbang:

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried checking the fuses for the door windows in case they are o a different circuit to the roof switch? Hopefully one of the forum geniuses will be along shortly to assist.

Well, all the fuses have been checked. Not a fuse. The passenger window goes down and up using the passenger door switch. The electric wing mirrors both work. Could it be the switch controls on the drivers door?

Not sure it's the same on the E89 is it?
The fact it worked again after some 'messing' makes me think the switch is iffy.
Any chance water has got into it?
I suspect the only way to prove it is to slave another switch in.

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Usually it’s the microprocessor in the door switch assembly that’s ‘off’..sometimes water has got into it and if dried out normal service returns 2-3 days later..that happened on my 20i…sometimes it goes ‘sarf never to return ..in which case it’s a replacement switch unit..

On my E85 the drivers switch would only make the window go down no matter which way I pressed it. Turned out to be a dirty contact.
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

E89 doesn’t use a traditional switch..all commands are routed via a microcontroller talking on a data bus..the fact that the windows goes down with the roof is the clue..plus all 5 switches on the controller don’t work..if it was a ‘real’ switch some of them would work..

Yup I don’t know..I was truly gobsmacked at how crazy automotive electronics had become ..bearing in mind that the G29 takes it to a new level that I can’t even get my head around…

Unfortunately, I'm not able to do a reset as the windows will not go up or down with the switch.
Also having problems trying to source a new switch panel. All the ones showing have the wing mirror button, but mine doesn't. Would this matter??

Your car doesn’t have electrically adjustable mirrors?
