Hi Guys, I thought I would join up, give some information and if anyone has any questions.

The position I placed the controller, I have purchased that trim piece off eBay and just waiting for it to arrive. It’s curved, so the controller won’t fit directly. So I will play around with it to see what the best option is.

I also plan to drill a hole on the trim, and hide the wire directly under the controller out of site.

I think the position for it is perfect. Your palm rests on the handbrake and you can freely turn the controller.

For those who don’t want to pay extra for the tv tuner retrofit loom, the navigation cable comes directly from the boot, into the cabin/ski hatch, so you can unplug it and connect it directly into the tv tuner. However, you will lose the navigation (black background) interface and it will be replaced by the tv tuner (blue background) interface. Which isn’t too much of a bother, since the only time you would go back to the OEM system, is to adjust the bass and treble, or check the computer stats.

You would need a tv tuner bracket or find a way to attach it in the boot.
EDIT: I have ordered tv tuner brackets, so not something to worry about.

I'm very interested in this, so a parts list would be really helpful. I don't have the TV tuner option

Tv tuner retrofit cable - 61120144096
It’s not necessary, unless you want to keep the original navigation menu and navigation in play.

Tv tuner bracket - 65506904350

I will have stock for these parts, so if you can’t get hold of any of them, I can provide it.

yeahhhhh that can work for me, do you have some smaller versions of the i drive control unit?

how difficult a DiY is this???? this makes this setup wonderfully functional once again, and the resolution looks absolutely fine.

do you have an installation guide for the DIYers?

Beedub, anything in that area is very easy , especially as you are used to dismantling stuff.

I have done plenty of Intravee fittings so have taken that centre console and cubby place apart very often without actually breaking anything :D

The place of the controller determines what needs to happen as well.

Is that £390 as per Tom's opening post and includes the bracket and all you need parts wise?

It’s £390 for the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto installed inside the tv tuner. Comes with controller and universal microphone.

I can provide bracket for extra and the tv retrofit loom for extra, if you don’t want to lose the original navigation option. The retrofit tv tuner cabling is optional for this to all work.
The system will go into carplay/android auto as soon as you turn the ignition on.

I have attached a smaller version of the controller. This will be an extra £70, as the kit this controller comes with cost far more. The rest of the system and its function is the same.
Personally, if you are going to place the controller under the handbrake, the larger controller is better on the hand. The smaller controller means you will have to pinch more, over the handbrake. I’m assuming this, so does need to get tested.

DIY wise, I haven’t had too much experience working with z4s. The following is the fitting requirements:

- remove boot trim to access ski hatch. From here you can disconnect the blue connector from navigation and either directly connect it to the tv tuner or fit the retrofit cable. Straight forward plug and play.

- connect bracket 3-4 nuts holds the tv tuner /bracket in place.

- from the tv tuner, you will have a green and blue female 3.5mm jack connections. Blue for auxiliary cable, which will need to be fed to the back of the headunit up front. It will come with pins, so you would need to slot them into the correct location on the headunits connector. I can provide the pin numbers.

- the green jack is the microphone. This would also need to be fed to the front of your location. Usually up the pillar. If you have original telephone system, you can use original microphone, but I would need to modify it. You can then get the connector from me to tap straight into the Bluetooth connector in the boot.

- next is the controller. This needs to get to the centre console. I believe there is an entrance on the driver side for all the cables to get into the cabin area.

- if you are placing controller under the handbrake, you have an easy way or a more difficult stealth way, by drilling a hole and hiding the cable under. I have bought that trim piece, so I will make one to experiment with and can sell that trim with the controller attached to it.

That’s it really. Main parts are getting the aux cable to the headunit. The rest should be pretty straight forward and plug and play.

If someone does volunteer to be the first, I can document the install and share it. If someone is handy around the z4, and wants to come and help me install it in their car, I can give you good discount.

Ok, I would not approach it from the boot as in a roadster that doesn't work, but I would remove (hinge) the centre console from the inside and get to the back of the DVD player. The cable can be tucked on the side of the console, I took the first time the console apart but that is not required. Subsequent times I simply removed the side screws from the left side of the tunnel and pushed the cable up as you have enough space to do so.

I would not want the controller under the handbrake, so need to think of something better (for me at least).

ok price me up with the below please baris

i WILL need the cable as i want to be able to switch back to the original nav setup to adjust the DSP if and when needed. , the bracket plus the smaller i drive unit which looks fine to me and well worth the slightly ugliness to turn this nav into basically a modern setup thus imo making it once again a desirable option.

do you have any pics of the actual android box and its size ( im taking this installs in the backet ) ? looks like i'm ready for a winter project, ill document the install in a yt video for my business channel.

No worries, you can always give me a shout if you get stuck with getting something apart.

I am tempted as well but need to find a different place for the controller as I use the handbrake and know I will knock that all the time then.
