Surely you can drive it if you take her off the insurance and then add her back on when you get a sensible quote.?Pondrew wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 12:52 amBeen doing the "ah now she has passed her premium goes up by £5,000,000 a year" conversations with the insurance already.Ole gits rule wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 7:25 pm now get that wallet out n pony up the extra for her insurance and the tramadol to keep SWMBO calm
Ironically, she now can't drive as her original insurance is invalid until I re-mortgage the house. I can't drive the car either until I stump up the increased premium!
I would look around and cancel if you can get the insurance cheaper elsewhere

yeah as soon as they pass their learner insurance is invalid (and that includes your cover as well). Well worth looking at these black box companies as they generally work out a lot cheaper.Pondrew wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 12:52 amBeen doing the "ah now she has passed her premium goes up by £5,000,000 a year" conversations with the insurance already.Ole gits rule wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 7:25 pm now get that wallet out n pony up the extra for her insurance and the tramadol to keep SWMBO calm

Driving instructors have always been akin to football referee's, each sees each incident differently and applies their own interpretation of the rules.
Some absolutely shocking decisions too.
After watching the Inbetweeners Simon do his test, it does seem plausible such situations happen as it can be hard to see how some people passed a test.
On a test drive last week I had a customer go the wrong way round a roundabout. Interesting moment for myself and her husband.
Embarrassingly there was a cry of, "FFS woman, what are you bloody doing?"
Obviously the husband had enough sense to keep quiet though......

When the wee fella passed his test we went from Collingwood learners insurance to Smart Wheels (black box type thing) and it wasn’t too spiteful.
Pondrew, Ori phoned me last week and we were talking about this. He told me of a product that I’d never heard of. It’s an additional product to a basic insurance. You/the Mrs have your £250 policy and your daughter takes out an additional policy only for when she’s driving the car. Still wasn’t cheap but Ori said manageable and not as dear as insuring the conventional way. He’d be able to give you much more detail

I bought a car for them to learn in before they could drive, so it was in my name, then I added them as learners and when they passed, added them as drivers. Was about £650 for my daughter to be added as a driver with me being the policy holder.
We did all use that car as it was great to have a car that you could actually park without having a heart attack when walking back to a car park and seeing what is next to you.

Her car has been insured in her name since she got it/ her provisional licence. Me and her mum are named drivers on her policy. The idea was that after a year (hopefully) she would get a year's NCB.
So I have paid the extra £800 on her existing policy until renewal to hopefully get a years NCB.
I did find cheaper quotes, cheapest was £1,600 a year but it would have meant cancelling her current policy and losing eight months towards a NCB.
I spent 2 hours yesterday and this morning on the phone to "specialist young drivers" brokers to compare. Both came in at over £4,000! Waste of time they were!

Sticking with the same company at least earns the no claim, after a year (including provisional) it is on the statement, so then you can move around with that 1 year on there. Good plan.
Strangely though, on my Z4 I had 0 no claim, and on renewal of the premium (6 months later on a multi car), it had 1 years no claim on it, even though it was 6 months.

When you asked for insurance quotes, you should have told them that the car has barely turned a wheel without leaking vital fluids. It’s hard to crash a car that’s broken down and I’m sure no one would try to steal it eitherPondrew wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 12:53 amShe couldn't stand there too long as the bloody thing would have poured some kind of liquid on her shoes!Argyll Andy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 12:24 am and she looks so pleased with her lovely reliable Mini

That's the truth. I'm thinking that's why a 120bhp Mini is relatively cheap insurance for a 17 year old....the thieves don't want to pay for recovery!
According to her black box 'app' she has driven 43 miles since passing her test....bless her!
She did go to her friend's house yesterday, which involved negotiating one of the most dangerous junctions in the UK (look it up, the A16 near Crowland...many many deaths since it opened in 2010). She survived! Although don't think my old ticker could survive too many more trips for her there!
It is so dangerous that the Highways thought long and hard about changing it....so they reduced the speed limit from 60 to 50 for about 300 yards....oh and painted some bits of the junction red (which has since worn off). Well done Highways...nice to see you are looking out for the safety of the tax paying public! CNUTS!

That’s twice the power of my first car, but it’s probably twice the mass too.Pondrew wrote:That's the truth. I'm thinking that's why a 120bhp Mini is relatively cheap insurance for a 17 year old....the thieves don't want to pay for recovery!
That particular car landed on its roof on a single track road five months after I passed my test (at the first attempt - the test, not the crash. I’d already had a few practice crashes by that point).
The car held up fairly well until I kicked the driver’s door open and the roof collapsed. Or, more accurately, the space between the lower half of the car and the road rapidly diminished as the A pillar collapsed. The roof itself remained fairly motionless once it was in intimate contact with the tarmac. Fortunately, since I was lying on the inside of the roof at the time, I was able to shuffle out.
As I stood beside my upturned car in the pouring rain, I felt a little crushed, but actually sustained only a few minor lacerations from the broken windscreen.
They’d probably run out of money after turning the hard shoulder into a lane on the motorway and then paying compensation to the people killed in the inevitable collisions that resulted.Pondrew wrote:According to her black box 'app' she has driven 43 miles since passing her test....bless her!
