Rubber trim around the windscreen

Post by darich » Tue Feb 20, 2024 1:30 pm

Couple of photos of mine after I fitted the new trim. I didn't take any images of it before I started...or during it

Rubber trim around the windscreen

darich wrote: Tue Feb 20, 2024 9:54 am Only other thing I'd say is, most importantly, use proper trim removal tools. In my research before starting, I saw posts claiming cracked screens etc.....using proper tools and it's no issue. E85 part number ends in 11, Coupe ends in 21. No idea what the difference is. But I notice that some places, including where I bought it, have the E86 part ending in 11. I bought the part ending in 11. It fits just fine.

Rubber trim around the windscreen

Post by Lin Walker » Tue Feb 20, 2024 5:34 pm

Hats off to anyone who can remove/replace the top portion of an E86/Coupe windshield gasket with the windshield still in place! Attached is a picture of my DIY solution. It retains the metal portion and hard plastic lip of the original gasket as a foundation, as it didn't leak and was structurally sound. It also uses the windshield pillar portions of a new gasket. Give me a call at 252 241 4359 and I'll tell you how you can do it. Best regards, Lin

Rubber trim around the windscreen

Post by BigDaddy » Sun Feb 25, 2024 1:36 am

On the verge of doing this myself. Ripped the old one out tonight. I bought one from sytners the other week. Took the car for a run after taking the old one out as I was running out of light and wanted to try and rekindle the love. It was really loud with the trim missing once I went over 50 mph. Looking forward to new one in.

Rubber trim around the windscreen

Mine is split, but my screen is also badly pitted from driving on gritty airfield track days and now (around 18 months and counting) has a 15mm stone chip. I think I'll just hand the new trim to the fitter who replaces the screen when I eventually get around to it :D

Rubber trim around the windscreen

Post by BigDaddy » Sun Feb 25, 2024 2:59 pm

Just done mine. It’s actually pretty easy to fit, it just pushes into place. I did mine by taking the roof down and standing in the car so I could push down on it.

Taking the old gunk off was the time consuming part. At first it thought I’d taken enough off, but ended up taking it out and doing it again as there was a little gap at the top in a couple of places. Once I’d stripped all the gunk out with a screwdriver and put it back it in sits flat now though. Easy enough diy job!

Easy enough on an E85, but it’s not just as easy on the E86 Coupe.

What is it that makes it more difficult on an E86 ? :?

to be honest, I have no idea as I have yet to try it, but from a lot of forum posts out there about the topic, everyone seems to say its harder on the coupe

I've never changed the trim on an E85 but my E86 was under an hour to remove the old one, fit the new one, remove it to get a better fit and then refit it.
I've no idea how some people have managed to crack windscreens or even how it's become a thing online that the E86 is harder.

This is the top of the e85 when I did the refresh of the rubber. Not really sure what is different with the e86 except for the material of the roof
