Damp carpet in E86

Post by Unitedleeds1919 » Mon Mar 25, 2024 7:28 pm

So I’m a bit baffled basically the passenger side carpet got a bit damp despite the car not moving so while I was away the Mrs dried it all out and I just went out as I remembered to check it now I’m home, it’s a little bit wet but nothing serious so I took a few pictures …one picture is underneath it looks like a drain type plug and I’m veering towards that as it was wet and looks like it might line up where the water comes in where my finger is pointing on another picture, the above picture shows a lift on the seal …the car is parked on a slight lean on the path as most with two cars have to path park in the cul de sac
The plastic that is lifted a bit on the top doesn’t seem to prevent much in the way of water getting in.

Is that a drain plug on the bottom of the door? Does anyone know? I’m a bit head scratchy as water is a sod to find where it originates.

Damp carpet in E86

My starting point would be the membrane inside the door.
They can fail, or the butyl adhesive fails. Fairly easy fix...and a pretty common problem.
Availability of the membrane likely to be your biggest problem.

Yep...inside the door card.
Youtube will give you some good info....I took my door cards off just a couple of weeks ago to add speakers.
My membranes were fine but in my last Z4, years ago, I had to replace the passenger side membrane and tape.

Membrane doesn't need to be perfect....a few minor tears and flaws is fine, but if it's badly damaged or if you're sourcing a leak, then it might be worth replacing regardless of condition to eliminate that as a problem.
