Back to the fold - maybe :)

Post by hairyfrogowl » Tue Apr 02, 2024 7:25 pm

Hi all
ex Z4 owner seriously considering coming back to the fold after 5 years on the SLK dark side!

Happened across a 2019 M40i at the weekend and was taken out in it (didn't have the license with me).

Was very impressed. Looks great inside and out and the hood has come on leaps since my E85 version - I think it's as quiet as the hard topped SLK.

Wondering what model to go for - the six pot sounded amazing but do I really need that much power?!

My real concern was the ride quality - after having a love hate relationship with the E85 being so darned hard on the rubbish UK tarmac.
The roads it was demo'd on were dual carriageways (so pretty flat) but I have to say it felt pretty smooth but I was wondering how the
M40i with adaptive (as this had) on 19's compares to e.g. the "Sport" (prob without adaptive as I believe it's an option) on 18's.

Is there a massive difference? Is it worth me trying to find a Sport or plumping for the M40i :)

Thanks All
G29 M40i Love it!

Firstly congrats on the weirdest name…..since whenever….

Forget any similarities with an E85, this is a completely new car from the ground up, and is bang up to date. A solid firm chassis that is very stiff in itself, but utilises compliant springs, dampers and pick up points to deliver a very well designed and supple ride. It’s the same kind of feeling as a 718 boxster just not as light or as sharp. You can alter the dampers to suit yourself, but even at their stiffest it’s not bone shaking hard. I’d really recommend taking your licence and take one out. No, tbh, you don’t need an M40i, there’s plenty in the 4 pot, especially if you don’t rag cars. You won’t have the same torque or the deep engine note, but really the 6 pot is not a particularly tuneful engine, it’s a peach but doesn’t have much drama sound wise so unless it simply has to be a 6, 4 is enough for real world usage. Imho…!

Hope you get one, as a cruiser and pretty lively weekend car or everyday one it’s hard to beat, I’d have another without any hesitation. :driving:

Lol thanks! Comes from my time of having long hair and an old friend somehow came up with it!

Thanks for the info, really useful 😃 I will give one a try at the weekend.
Btw. Have you had the stone in brakes issue at all? I have a shingle drive so was reading that thread with some interest...

Thanks again.

If you are going for the 4 pot the Sport model has been dropped, only the MSport available now. I’ve had both, the MSport is a tad harder ride and is noticeably lower to get in and out. Still reasonably comfortable though for my old bones!

You can probably find a used Sport model if that’s what you want. The only way to be certain is to test drive.

I've just bought a G29 30i Msport after owning an E89 for the last 9 years, starting to really like it now... make sure you get one with lots of 'whistles and bells' . Took it out the garage today and it reversed itself out the garage, down the garden, round the gates and along the drive, pretty cool 8). The only issues I'm having is trying to update the software :headbang:

I’ve had my M40, for 6 weeks or so, I test drove a 20i and 30i before choosing the M40, I have a 128ti and felt the 2litre engined car was quite similar, but when I drove the M40 I knew this had to be the one.
I agree with Zed Baron get one with as much toys as yo can, suspension wise, I have it in comfort mode most of the time and I would say it was similar to my previous 430d xdrive.
when the weather improves and I get a chance to do some decent trips I will have more of a play with all the settings.
Good luck with the search.

I'm getting close to 40,000 glorious smiles in mine, it is comfortable enough for me even after five hours. I would say that it is over tyred with 255/35 R19 x 275/35 R19 and the Pilot Super Sports are not the quietest out there. Having just swapped from my winter 255/35 R19 Continental AllSeasonContants back to the Super Sports, I can really tell the difference in comfort, the Conti's are far more comfortable and quieter. I'm playing around with pressures at the moment, recommended pressures for comfort are 2.2 bar @ 11.0C or eco 2.7 bar at 11.0C, so set them at 2.4 bar as a compromise. Steering is more responsive but tyre noise, as you would expect, is worse.

No, never had this problem on either of my G29s.

My wife had this problem on her Audi A3 last week, if that helps! 😊

I have no experience of the G29….. but it’s good to see someone tempted back from the dark side.

I've had the issue once when my tyres were new. Makes an awful racket. Mine fixed itself with the jolt from an unseen pot hole.

Love my M40i... Drive most of the time in comfort, only pressing the Sport button when the twisties arrive.. :driving: :driving:

Oh and if you get the option of what tyres you get the car with, try and avoid the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, they are awful. Give no confidence when they are cold, and take ages to warm up...And ive been told they are, noisy too... Im just about to swap mine out for either the Conti 7,s or Michelin PS4S,s....

Stones in the brakes are can be an issue, . Ive only,, thankfully had it happen once, but that was enough.. What a Sccrreeeeeeetch.... Managed to dislodge it with braking and weaving... But i carry a long slim screwdriver in the boot , just in case...

The stone issue is possibly not particular to a G29. I've had it on my TTS.
