So my 05 Z4 automatic does not have paddles on the steering wheel but you can move the gear shift to the left and manually shift gears. Does that mean it’s a SMG-ll automated manual transmission or not? If not, please explain what this SMG transmission is please..

You have the ZF 5 or 6 speed automatic it has a torque converter you may so have a sport button which alters be gear change points, steering wheel paddles were fitted to later models. The SMG gearboxes are automated manuals there is a computer and hydraulics that change gear, my daughter has one in a Audi Q5 you wouldn’t know it wasn’t a full auto, but if you do get a fault it becomes very expensive, so SMGs are not popular generally.

Many of todays cars are fitted with the ZF automatics as standard including the latest Z4, if there is a manual version it’s is likely special order.
