New battery issue

Post by t90ark » Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:05 pm

Can any body help?

I've put a new battery on the car. It's coded and registered, no problem.

I now have 2 issues I never had before.

1. Drivers window won't fully close. It'll go all the way up and back down a few inches. It won't reset to stay up.
2. Parking brake error. Bimmerlink reports an earthing issue on both motors. Something I've done when swapping the battery?

Actually, it appears the windows aren't dropping to open the doors.

Ok, after much faffing, the windows seemed to need a reset. They are working now.

I'm still none the wiser regarding the parking brake.

2 things could have happened:

Removing the battery causes a rest of the various ECUs - things like windows etc can sometimes need to have the reset done (hold down switch / count to 10 / back to top etc - you can google the drill).

Parking break not so much - sorry no idea.

Yeah, that's essentially what I did. I saw a method of holding the button for 15 seconds. This seems to have cured it. Thanks though.

Parking brake on early E89s often fails when battery dies..may need to be re-programmed..Google faulty E89 parking brake for more info on fixes..

When you say 'fails', do you mean park brake not working at all?

It works, no problem, I've just got the yellow light and chuffin annoying bong, lol

New battery issue

I've had a bit of a search & people with this issue have had to visit a BMW dealer to get it reset (threads visible in this forum - use the search).

I'm dubious though - surely a decent quality code scanner could sort this out?

Whilst I have never tried (not had this fault), I'm 99% confident my autel 808bt (bit better than a billy basic) scanner would sort this out in 5 minutes.

I'm reading about a software update.

Apparently, the update removes a parking brake induced error caused by low voltage.

Good code reader tells you a few things about the electronic motors, voltage, cycles, temp. clamping pressure.
I had water short out one ebrake motor.
It came up as fault on dash.

New battery issue

I changed the battery in our E89 last week. I didn't have any issues with e-brake or windows TBH. The only thing I did do was to open both doors before dis-connecting the battery so both windows dropped a bit and wouldn't go back up after. That was sorted by just manually raisng the windows back up and it was all good after that.

Is it worth clearing the handbrake fault then immediately disconnecting the battery again? Leave it for 1/2 hour or so for the 'puters to 'forget' then hook it back up and re-register it. Worth a try, surely?
While it's disconnected maybe give the battery a quick charge just to make sure the voltage is healthy before you hook it back up.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

It affected pre 2012 cars..requires a s/w update..well beyond the ability of any code reader..needs INPA type device..

Sooooo.... confession time. Bear with me, lol.... it was all down to..... me!

I put the new battery in and registered with bimmerlink - all good. I then started fiddling with bimmercode, so ignition was on. Also, lights switch on auto and head lights came on.....

Long story short, new battery drained enough to trigger the ebrake warning. Fully charged said battery and no more warning.

(Wonders off with tail between legs, head down and a red face)
