F10 M5 to be automatic only

Motortrend: Why the F10 M5 May Be Automatic-Only

Motortrend provides some reasoning behind why they believe the upcoming F10 M5 may be M-division's first automatic-only model, featuring a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission only and no manual or dual clutch transmission option. (Thus far, the F10 M5 has only been spotted with automatic transmission)

Their reasoning for the lack of a DCT option is due to the monstrous torque that the F10 M5's twin turbo DI 4.4L V8 motor (S63) from the X5M/X6M is expected to generate. The F10 M5 is expected to feature more power than even the X5M/X6M which currently puts down 500 lb-ft torque, and could come in above 550 lb-ft. Apparently, BMW attempted to adapt the Getrag M DCT for the F10 M5 but was unable to do so without beefing it up with larger actuators, which would result in an unacceptable slow-down in the transmissions' response/shift time.

Motortrend does not provide their reasoning as to why a manual transmission option will not be offered, but the general thought that has been posted on our forums previously is that there are not or will not be enough interest from F10 M5 buyers for a manual option.

Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed and until then, it remains speculation. But, it won't be long until we know for certain which transmissions the M5 will or will not get, as the production F10 M5's internet reveal is expected this Summer / early Autumn, with the production M5's world premiere at the Frankfurt autoshow in September. We may even find out earlier than that when the concept M5 is shown at the Shanghai Autoshow in April.

===================================================================================================================================================

first they dropped the NA engines to put turbos in it, then they are going to drop the manual and DCT altogether. This M5 will be remembered as a 560i and not an M5. they might as well change its name to AMG5.

looks like our Z4M is going to be one of the last pure-breds from the M Division.

The M5 is not really a sports car anymore its a huge GT so auto will suit the car far better than a manual anyway. As long as this philosophy doesn't follow suit on the bigger models I will be happy.

In comparison with the e60 M5, e63 M6 and e90 M3; for me personally the Z4M was already one of the most pure-breeds that came from the M department the last years. I think the e60 M5 is a great and fast car, but it was a pity it was only offered with SMG in Europe.

The Z4M is an oldshool sports car without to many "unnecessary" extras. An NA engine with enough horsepower, relative low weight and rear wheel drive. No robotic SMG III or M DKG transmission, but and old fashioned manual gearbox. No suspension with 100 settings, but just one setting...sport.

I think the following M cars are going to make legend status with petrol heads in the future. Off course the e30 M3 and e21 M1. But also the e46 M3, e39 M5 and Z4M… And maybe the e90 M5 because of his V10 engine.

How can you have a Z4M from 2010? They stopped building them in 2008-2009?
