Castrol Edge

Post by Hotride » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:28 pm

Ok so i have done a search, but I cannot find what i need to know

I am going to give the car an oil change this weekend. I have just bought a new BMW oil filter kit, and now i just need to get the OIL.
I am going to go with Castrol Edge as it seems to be the BMW preferred. only question is do i get the 5w30 or the 0w40 oil??

My local dealer told me they use the 5w30 on all BMW's, however the castrol website says 5w30 is for tuned/turbo 4 cylinder cars and the 0w40 is for performance cars (eg bmw)
So the dealer says 5w30 and Castrol says 0w40. which one should i use?

Someone previously asked BMW about this. Here's the post...

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic ... 81#p229081

Castrol Edge 5W-30
Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40
Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-30
Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow BMW LL04l 0W-30 or 5W-30
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30
Shell Helix Ultra AP 5W-30
Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W-30

Personnaly I went with the Edge Sport 0W-40 because I'm a sucker for good branding!

Can't help you as I went for the Mobil 1 0W40, but after doing my first oil change for the Zed a couple of weeks ago I've got to comment on what a dream it is! Seriously why don't all engines have this kind of filter configuration? It prevents so much of the inevitable mess from changing the usual style of filter!

he has already done that and got conflicting advice...

as long as it conforms to BMW Long Life 01 spec you will be fine...

the later spec oil is LL04 which is I think what I put in the last time...

I did as Alan said it told me - CASTROL SLX PROFESSIONAL LONGTEC BMW LL01

Castrol SLX Professional Longtec BMW LL01 is an advanced synthetic SAE 5W-30 high performance motor oil. It combines outstanding low temperature fluidity and high load protection. Castrol SLX Professional Longtec BMW LL01 has been specifically formulated to meet the latest requirements of European OEMs for passenger car and light commercial petrol and diesel engines, including BMWs Longlife Oil specification.
If unavailable, refer to Dealer. May use CASTROL EDGE SPORT 0W-40 for top up only

So it mentions i should use SLX Professional - but doesnt mention Edge 5w30.
then it says 0w-40 can be used for top up only? none of these responses tell me which oil is best...

LL01 spec oil is Castrol Edge 0w-30, dealers will stock this as SLX to confuse the matter further.

Later facelifted cars use LL04 spec oil I believe which changed to 5w-30 - something to do with emissions.

Bit like Edge 10w-60 is called TWS for the M cars (Ten w Sixty).
Silver Grey 2007 Z4MR which needs to be driven more  :P  :D

Adam D - You are right in England. Not in Australia. Due to our crappy fuel somehow the Castrol Edge is not LL01 here. and it doesn't come in 0W30

this is the castrol range available to us http://www.castroledge.com.au/product/ and my dealer doesn't actually sell motor oil unless i buy some labour too :headbang: .
