265 tyre on 8.5 rim??
anyone, I may be in the position to get a cheap set of csls - the only thing is that they are 8.5 all around - would a 265 on the rear 8.5 be too much? Ive done a bit of research and some are saying its ok and some are saying no??

I've got a 255 on a 19 x 8.5J and thats fine, can't imagine an other 5mm on each side would look wrong, you never going to kerb your alloys though!

Personally I would not go wider than 255 on an 8.5 rim as you may compromise the ride and handling although that doesn't mean you can't fit them.
I don't really see any advantage of going that wide and they will have cost you more money.

Tire mfgs will specify a rims size range for each tire size. Most will specify a range for 265/35 - 18's to be fitted to a 9-10.5" rim. Most tire dealer in the US will not mount a tire to a rim that is not in the range specified by the mfg.

In respect of your first point are you going to notice an additional 10mm width? I don't think so. At the end of the day the wheel is still only 8.5 inches wide whatever tyre you squeeze on there.doofus4000 wrote:dav to the rescue - thanks lad. im just looking that fat look of the 265's and thats why I asked. would it affect the stability of the wheel then?
As for the tyre size in relation to the wheel rim width in simplistic terms it is calculated by taking 85% of the tyres sectional width. So your 255 tyre in English is 10.04 inches wide. 85% of 10.04 inches is 8.534 inches which rounded down makes an ideal wheel width of 8.5'' for your 255 tyre.
