I wouldn't go further than E85/E86, M and then E89. Not much difference between E85 and E86, and a lot of people seem to take bits from one to the other (facelift bits onto pre-facelift etc etc).

Liking the discussion so far, thanks guys...

The 'M' section would be a sub-section of e85/e86, and at a future date if/when BMW release an M e89 we can drop one in there.

Also worth considering how the next model i.e. the one after the E89 will "fit" into the structure... assuming of course there is a direct replacement.

The way we seem to be going towards handles that though, right? i.e. in the case you suggest we drop in a new e90 (or whatever) section along with a new problems (etc) section.

Nice suggestions... I like the gallery idea... not sure about separate sections for the car types but I like the concept of separating the photo comp

I think the set up is fine pretty much as is, maybe a wee touch here and there but no more, reason for that is the more sections you have it initself will make it seem a bit fussy, messy and to an extent promoting clique-ism if thats a word, I enjoy ythe banter from all types of owners and I fear that if there is individual sections for different models then peeps may tend to haunt their specific sections and not "mingle" as much.
For me I think the only section that should incorporate Model specific is the Problems thread.

Just my opinion but if it aint broke don't fix it.

Thanks... you make some good points there, some of which I have been thinking about myself. I don't want to split the forum or make clique groups, so we do have to consider that.

The main issue for me that makes it messy is there is a specific e89 forum and a specific M forum, yet the other ones are just covered by "general".

I may be completely off the mark here but I presumes a lot of the more active members use the "new posts" feature more than the individual sections (I know I do). I presumed the sections are more use for new members or people visiting. Like I said, I may be off the mark with that presumption.

Nooooooo!!!! I HATE sub-divisions - all they do is make the forum harder to read. Personally I think the forum works pretty well as is, hence the only suggestions I'd make are:
1) split out the E89s and replicate the subdivisions that exist for the E85/E86
2) obviously the E89 don't need separate Detailing & Bodywork, Gallery or Dealer Feedback, so they could sit within the "General" section alongside Meets, the Lounge, etc.
3) IMO the E85/E86 don't need separated...

Starting with the existing sections/format, how about (modified bits in italics):

Forum
- Forum Discussion
- Newbies Forum
- (Do we really need the Z4 Forum Insurance Scheme subforum? I'd drop it)

E86/86 Discussion
- General Z4 Discussion
- ///M Specific (cos those guys are special ;) )
- Problems
- How To

E89 Discussion
- General E89 Discussion
- (leave a space for "E89 ///M Specific" for future...)
- Problems
- Hot To

General
- Detailing & Bodywork (moved from Z4 Discussion)
- Gallery (moved from Z4 Discussion)
- Dealer Feedback (moved from Z4 Discussion)

- Meets/Events
- The Lounge
- On The Light Side
- Other Marques
- Discount Codes and Affiliates
- Featured Articles

Marketplace
- Z4-related goods
- Z4 cars only
- Non Z4-related goods

Lump you in beside the E85/E86 ///M Specific section? Or is too much of an insult?

Interesting one... Alpinas are definitely worth a mention, but not sure the traffic would warrant a whole section to itself, so in with the M's might be an idea?
