What's wrong with the 3liter of the 3 series?
Hello,
I don't understand why BMW is using an 'old' 2.5/3.0 engine type in the new Z4.
Why not using the engine out of the 3/5 series like they also do for the 3.5 version?
Or are these engines not in compliance with EU5 requirements, except the 3.5 one?
The direct injection engine has more power, using less fuel and has a lower CO2 output.
Am I missing something?

I thought they are using the new engines. S-drive 3.5 and 3.0. The 3.5 is the twin turbo like the rest of the product line.

Pre-facelift Z4s used the older 2.5 and 3.0. Facelift went to the newer 3.0l. As I understand it, the 3.5 is the new 3.0 with twin turbos bolted on, right? The Z4 was the first car to get the new 3.0 and it's spread out to the others now.

Wonder if it`d be possible to drop in the twin turbo lump into the current Z4 Coupe? There`s a mod for someone to try in the future
Chassis design; anyone know if the new Z4 is based on the current 3 series chassis or does it share the same chassis as the old Z4? If I remember correctly, the current Z4 is based on the E46 chassis.

Yes, the 3.5 is a 2979cc with High Precision Direct Injection and Twin Turbos. But I refer to the non-turbos.Smokin wrote:Pre-facelift Z4s used the older 2.5 and 3.0. Facelift went to the newer 3.0l. The sDrive30i will use a multi point injection system but the 330i E90 uses a more advanced High Precision Direct Injection system.

3 serie 3.0i - 272 HP 320 nm Av. fuel consumption 7,2 liter/62miles - CO2 173g/km
Better torque curve, more responsive, more ECO...a new N52 version (EURO4 -> EURO5)?

what are you talking about? The sDrive35i uses the 3.0L TT engine that is used in the 335i and the sDrive30i will use the same engine that was used in the E85/86 3.0si. There is nothing wrong with the TT 3.0L of the 3/5 Series.

The Z4 with the sDrive30i is the exact same engine as the outgoing Z4 3.0si
Not sure how you think the engine old and outdated, it is very current and a wonderful engine.

Yes, these models use the same engine. I'm talking about the non-turbos, so the sDrive23i and sDrive30i.pmeloche wrote:what are you talking about? The sDrive35i uses the 3.0L TT engine that is used in the 335i
I agree, the N52 engine platform is great.the sDrive30i will use the same engine that was used in the E85/86 3.0si.
I'm just wondering..why does BMW prefer to use
* multi-point injection NON-turbo (N52) (258 HP 310 nm )
above the
* direct injection NON-turbo engines? (272 HP 320 nm)

BMW 330i and 325i got better and newer engine (N53), while Z4 sDrive30i and sDrive23i got older egnine (N52).e85sbm wrote:The Z4 with the sDrive30i is the exact same engine as the outgoing Z4 3.0si

I don't know why, but I bet BMW is working on that and maybe some new engines will be available in one year time ?

Re: What's wrong with the 3liter of the 3 series?
The N52 of the E89 is not quite the same engine as that of the E85/86. See the HP and torque Euro specs.
I guess the engine was ECO tuned and changed to integrate BMW's effecient dynamics stuff.

Re: What's wrong with the 3liter of the 3 series?
I think I have found an answer on my question.
The direct injection engine N53 is NOT in compliance with the EU5 emission limits (required from September 2009).
The new N52 version does.

Re: What's wrong with the 3liter of the 3 series?
well, figures for the 23 does not look so good, compared to the E92 325 i , the new z23 is as heavy, with less torque, pollutes more, with a higher consumption (city ---> 3l more ! ).. ok that is on paper, but was rather disapointed by the 325i engine, little caracter, linear and could hardly hear it in the cabin... hope that bmw has worked on that for the roadster... well also because i just order it ! but still hesitate with 30i.

I will try to test drive them both. The 3.0 is high on my list.

i think all this analysis over the numbers is kinda irrelevant. my experience with bimmers is that driving the cars is necessary before you truly understand why the engineers implement what they do

i mean, i've driven other cars who "claim" they are better than another car at something or a car who "claims" the car has more horsepower, but then when u drive the car, it's like "what??"
