Disa valve advice please

Post by john-e89 » Mon Dec 05, 2016 10:44 am

Hey,

Bizarrely the disa on my 99k 04 3.0se is fine, pin tight, flap connected, nice and clean all round, however there is approx 5mm loose play in the flap. I don't know if that's acceptable or if the flap should be fully tight with zero play, for the job it does I'm thinking it should be fully tight and it might be on its way out with a replacement a good idea. Anyone any idea and if I ought to buy a new valve does anyone have a preferred outlet? Plenty on the bay but there's a consensus that I should buy from X then I'll do that. Any thoughts? The pics below show the amount of free movement in the flap.

Thanks very much as always. :)

Good to check the DISA every couple of months John so props to you as you may have caught it while on its' way out.
A simple further check is to rotate the flap back until you can place your finger over the small air inlet hole - if the flap holds its' position with your finger over the hole then at least the diaphragm is ok. play in the flap will be indicative of the internal spring/bearing mech beginning to fail.

There are repair kits all over the internet including an aluminium flap version. Ovekill imo but at least its their as an option.

I'd be tempted not to drive it until replaced/repaired as the flap pin can also work its way loose and into the engine - that will be catastrophic if ingested.

Also a good idea to give it a cleanup with an old toothbrush and some silicone spray (plastics) or similar

good luck!

Also, be careful not to overtighten the torx bolts on replacement, as I did. you'll remember my 'Betty's first tantrum' thread or the separate thread I made re the bolts but OMG what a PITA that was!
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=90630&hilit=torx

Suggest a mere soupson of copper grease / antiseize on the threads for future inspections....

I think the n52 engines have a different disa that doesn't cause the same issues.
