Another rear shell 2 broken wire.
Rear shell half close froze.
Ign. off it dropped under gravity, then would lock.
Warm morning so seems to follow the same symptoms of wires pulling apart with some warm.

I think this time i need to replace all the wires as far back beyond the last bend.

Can you use a more flexible type of wire that would withstand the bending movement?

Be cheaper to invest in an air conditioned garage at this rate. With a high ceiling so you can sort your roof out before sallying forth. :)

RobbiZ4 recommended replacing with LiFY wire in his recent post on the Roof Problems thread; also saying that your issues are an inevitability for all of us on our E89s. P'raps time to set up a loom building business :D

Out of interest what year and how many mies on your zed FB?
On other convertibles I have owned, rag tops, they all stated in the manuals that the roof should not be opened in colder temps as the neoprene skin that keeps the roof watertight could crack.
Anyone who works with cabling knows that wires also stiffen during colder weather so maybe this is part of the cause??!!

Put this out to the forum for thoughts...

Correct, but obviously that doesn't matter on the E89.
I can't see any "series" of misconduct in the use of our roofs.
I've seen the youngest E89 with broken wires already in the age of 6 years after production. Others from 2009 I've checked were in a good condition after 13 years. But we all need to be prepared for these disruptions.

Good idea! Organize a training workshop for roof repairs with 3 or 4 guys, who will be able to support you all over the UK.
- replacement of all 4+2 wires in a dismantled roof shell
- replacing the 2 microswitches coupling fastener in the trunk
- replacing the complete roof harness, if there is a hydraulic leak
I'd join it. :D

Well, in between I'm thinking/working on an electrical replacement solution of the hydraulic stuff (only) in the roof shell. Done this, we can sanitize the roof harness with simple LiFY wires in a good quality. :thumbsup:
 
My business partner bought a 2012 zed in 2013.
Only 8k miles and roof was nothing but problems, Friday afternoon car..
4 times to the dealer, inch and half of receipts.
Finally parking brake failed at 11k miles.
She got rid of it.
 
Are there common situations with E89 owners having these issues? Age of car / frequency of roof operation / storage, outside or garaged... or is this design just crap? Not something I'm looking forward to....
 
I have owned my 2009 car since 2012.
First roof problem i would say was 5 years ago, loose connector.
Then last couple of years broken wires.
My car daily driver for work so for six months or more of the year the roof is down daily, minus rainy days.
So at least 1000 cycles by now. Plus whatever previous owner did for 3 years.
