E86 Coupe Rusty Rear Quarters

So I left the Coupe into my local paint/body shop to have them remove the rust on the rear quarters and respray where necessary.
Video footage and some photos shows the damage is worse than hoped with the view that cutting out the rot may not be the best.
I had been checking eBay etc for spare rear quarters but nothing ever came up, and unfortunately the E85 panels don't fit.
I ended up phoning my local dealership parts department who informed me that there were 4 RHS panels in Germany, and 1 LHS panel in the UK.
I took the hit and bought both. £460 for each (inc VAT). Will get them to the bodyshop next week.
Not what I was wanting, but at least will know that they are new, the shop has told e thy will treat them on the insides etc and they'll tidy up the rest of what can be seen in the pictures and respray.
I didnt think the panels were available through BMW anymore????

Wow, that's pretty bad inside. Are they planning to cut out and replace where the mount nuts are (pics 1 and 2)?
No surprise that the outer arch was needing to be replaced if the inside was that groggy..
I replaced an outer rear arch this summer, for a teeny tiny bubble, new from BMW for around the same price from memory.

What's the general story with the car? miles, garaged, from oop north ?

It'll be well nice when you have it back all sparkly. !

yeah - they will be taking care of everything that needs to be done.
Overall the car is in good condition, the underneath is pretty clean and I plan on using lanoguard or something similar soon on it.
It's 121k miles, probably never garaged (certainly not with me). Was bought from Glasgow, but hadn't spent too long up there as it was originally from England.I guess it just shows you what you cant see can sometimes be scary.

The brackets collect mud and then trap moisture.
They all start the rust in the same place.
You only notice when you see a small bubble. By that time the rust has already set in.
Cars rust from the inside out.

I do wonder how the middle arches have gone so bad, how did water get inside there? It looks like water has sat between the middle and inner arch, in the void between them.

When I pulled one of my outer arches off for replacement I noticed the spot welds on the middle arch had a very light dusting of surface rust on each of them, underneath the very thin grey (primer?) coat, I suspected this was from condensation building between the outer and middle arch as it was on the outer face, I did not see any of the corrosion Chanlon has in pics 1 and 2.

Mine is an 80k 2008, early few years up north, then central, then midlands, from what I've gathered from speaking to previous owners, garaged 50% of it's life but that's a wild estimate..

Hopefully mine will look as clean as yours after the work has been done

Is NI better than Scotland with regards to rust?
I've no idea to be honest. From an actual position, we probably aren't as far north, but do get our share of crap weather and salted roads.

According to AI.....
Conclusion:
Scotland might be a bit worse in terms of rust risk due to the combination of harsher winter conditions (more snow and more road salting) and the persistent coastal exposure to salty air. However, Northern Ireland isn't far behind, especially along the coasts and in areas with high humidity. In both regions, regular cleaning, undercoating, and rustproofing can help mitigate the damage caused by these environmental factors.

Dinitrol ML injected into the box sections using the extension hose until it flows out, seems very good at keeping the rust at bay. A cheap boroscope is good at finding areas of rust in the box sections.

How are the repairs going Chanlon1?
Got the car back last week and really happy with it. Weather meant I never even considered taking photos.
The paint shop told me that they had resprayed the new panels, then put them on the car and weren't happy with them, so they resprayed them again.
Some of the boot lid, rear bumper, doors and skirts were also resprayed to blend the paint in.
Overall it was costly, but I now know I have brand new panels on the car and they have been treated behind along with the chassis.

Costs:
2 new panes from BMW: £460 in VAT each
Paint work: £1000
Total: £1920

Popped out side now and took these.

What is going on with the side window seal? Looks overpainted and the rubber is lifting up.

Fantastic!
I do love a silver coupe...
Having all that rust gone from inside must be a good feeling.

But yes, something funky going on along the window rubber.
And also the plastic clips on the bottom the wings are now silver, they should be black.

I can understand if they needed to repaint a 2nd time and they didn't want to remove the panels again, they should have masked up a better.
Or just charged you 2 hours more labour to remove them .(they must be a wizz at the process now)
Or maybe they creased the new paint while installing, I remember that window seal being very tight and needed to be folded over the wing.

There does look to be a touch of over spray on the rubber. I was able to rub it off, so will just need to work my way round and tidy up. As to the rubber lifting, I know the very end was always sticking up near the door, but hadn't noticed it elsewhere. Looking at the photos I am not sure if it's cause of the overspray making it look different.
Is there a sealant that normally goes under the rubber trim to hold it to the panel?

What clip are you referring to? I couldn't tell you what was black or silver before!

Given the state of both quarters beforehand, the car is now 101% better. The rust was so bad on one side, I daren't go near it with a wash mitt let alone a hose.
At least now I know I have many years ahead of not worrying about rust coming through.

Yeah, worry free from now on..Good work! That's worth all the effort!
The Coupe rear quarter view is the best, and rusty bubbles ruin it..

The black plastic clips that hold the outer wing panel to the bumper and sill. They're black, but easily over-sprayed if spraying panels in situ. On your pics I can just see they're silver. No issue, but a sign something has happened.

I'd have never noticed...more than happy to tell a future purchaser the real reason and it wasn't due to some rear end accident.

Yeah, you have the paperwork and photos to prove it was cosmetic fixes rather than a prang.
Did you get a chance to see the repairs inside, on middle panel where they rusted through from the inside?

Yep, I got the old panels home with me. I'll get round to taking some photos of them.
Took a closer look today at the overspray and where the rubber looks lifted. From what I can tell, the over spray is on the leading edge of the rubber strip, and therefore in the photo it looks like the rubber has lifted. The paint was able to come off the rubber easily and it does look an other better.
Must take another couple of photos when there is daylight........
