Engine oil temperature too low?

Now my new Z4 has engine oil temperature gauge. After driving at 60 mph on dual carriageway over 6 miles, the engine oil temperature was still about 75 degree. Should the normal temperature be 120 degree (at the centre of the gauge)?

I'm not sure about a smaller engine as I have the 35i but mine usually runs just below centre gauge at around 90 - 100 on the highway at 75mph. I assume you are driving it very easy while you run it in. It makes sense to be running cooler at lower loading.

I was driving at 65-70 mph for 60 miles on motorway. The oil temperature reached 120 degree. But the air temperature was also higher than today.

Should the engine oil temperature point at the centre all the time (like the temperature gauge on E85/86)?

Can't say for sure, I just came back from 20 miles at 65mph and my oil temp was at 85 after sitting in the garage for 10 minutes. It does take a long time to warm up, at least 10 miles and I have an oil cooler on mine so my data is fairly meaningless for a comparison. Wait 'til you've run it in a bit more and can drive it a little harder then see what it does.

Oil takes a long time to get warm, last car I had with an oil temp guage could take 20 mins to get up to temp if it was really cold outside.

What does the manual say, I would say 120 sounds about right.

The manual says the normal oil temperature is 120 degree (at the centre of the gauge). The drive this evening could be too short (6 miles) and at low engine speed (just over 2,000 rpm). I was driving to reset the tyre pressure after checking and adjusting pressure for all wheels. When I go back to work next week, I will find out more differenes between E85 ane E89.

I have only reached the center of the Gage once, pushing it REAL hard, like 2 hours on twisties in the Black Forest, but normally the temp is between 75 and 90.

Sounds quite normal. With a 'normal' driving style, 6 miles won't be enough to warm-up the engine.

When the engine has reached the operation temperature, the oil temperature of my 30i does fluctuate between 95-105 Celsius.
