Heated seats

How are you getting on. its annoying when its not something obvious (it took me about 3 months to get the passenger seat going).

Is it possible to check if the car sees the driver side module or not via INPA?

Hi. I was at the NEC at the Classic Motor Show most of last week and so didn’t have any opportunity to take a look. This weekend I intend to start looking at connections and then see if I can see anything wrong via the diagnostics. I’ll keep you posted.

I had time this weekend to hook up the computer to the E89 to query the seats/ seat modules.

I think I have a good lead and software works - as I can connect and query various ECUs and code things up ... yet when I try and query the seat modules (either drivers or passengers, it doesnt matter) as follows:

I get the following errors:

I don't think its due to a bad cable as I can do other things ... I wonder if I need to update my SP-DATEN files??

Bear in mind that the Passenger heated seat works fine - just not the driver's ... I will try and lift the seat and look at the module etc but with the rain peeing down it will have to be later this week.

You appear to be able to ask INPA what modules are installed from this link if it helps to see if it "thinks" it should be?

I no longer have my laptop that was running inpa, so I cant test this myself now unfortunately.

I had a look in my foxwell setup, and my recent scan only shows the "seat module - driver SMFA" on my test result. I know when I did my previous install they are different types of modules so to me it looks like you wont be able to connect to the passenger seat one, and you really do have some sort of fault (cabling/hardware or software) on the drivers one, so they appear the same. Annoyingly now that I have upgraded to Windows 11, I don't seem to be able to make my laptop communicate with my Foxwell NT530 either ! :headbang:

Thanks for looking into it. Yes, I assume the PWM method for the passenger seat is handled differently than the (heated) seat controller of the driver's side so the diagnostics could be misleading. I think I will only really get to the bottom of this if I pull the seat out, check cables and do some measurements - for that I need a half decent day!

Thanks again

It looks like I have 2016 (vers 61?) SP-DATEN files of E89 - which I assume is OK??

The info is pretty sketchy on this software isn't it??? :headbang:

I checked my old installation but it was older than that - i've just downloaded the bmw tools from bimmergeeks and the sp-daten files are dated 2016. this is the file I believe tells you the version - is this the same as yours?

// Auftragsdatei: E89AT.000
// -350-
// Erstverw.Kogr.: 61.35
// Ident-Nummer: 6 933 698.5
DATUM 03.05.2016

I was able to communicate with the drivers side module (although it said there was a version mismatch, not sure if thats standard or not?) but nothing from the passenger side as expected.

Great, I have exactly the same version - thanks for checking.

It may well be I have an issue with the can bus at the drivers seat module (or the module itself of course).

I guess you accessed the module using the same route I showed above under “seat modules”?

A very good explanation on how to set it all up and update....
