Lacquer for protecting polished metal

As you can guess I'm asking about what lacquer folk have been using when polishing/refurbing their 108-style alloys...

I know Dave (Mr Whippy) posted some info on different types of lacquer, but IIRC it was quite pricey and appeared to be time-consuming. I was hoping there'd be some sort of aerosol-based lacquer that I could use once I've got my lips and inner surfaces polished up. Does such a thing exist?

I've tried some cheap stuff from Screwfix on some metal bike parts and TBH it's OK but not spectacular, plus i've had insufficient time to see how durable it's going to be.

So folks, exactly what lacquer have you used, and what sort of results have you had from it?

Cheers,
Ally

Used Halfords lacquer
Sure it's supposed to be a top coat over paint rather than metal specific lacquer but it was available, low cost and after 6 months is OK.
Real test will come in the salty Winter.

Cheers :)

The Screwfix "No Nonsense" lacquer isn't too durable. I'd recently polished up a set of cranks for one of my mountain-bkes and applied 4 layers of the lacquer to the metal. The lacquer's chipping off the face of the crank where my foot rubs against it, and that's after only 2 (admittedly muddy) rides. Not sure how that'd hold up to use on an alloy but I'd rather use something with better proven results.

I might manage to start on the wheels this weekend...

Im interested in the outcomes of this, I was going to have a go with my E46 M3 19's as there is a spot of milky-ness on one of them... Whats the best way to remove the laquer from offending area, without any damage to the polished face of the wheel ?
C10 - Did you mention Nitromoors or something to eat it off ? I dont really fancy rubbing as they are spotless, aside from the milky bit

I was planning on using nitromors with a (non-stick) plastic scouring pads - the half-sponge things you can get in tesco, etc. but others might be able to say what they used.

Iv had some good results with the Plastikote stuff before, never used it on wheels though but they do one specifically for metallics.

Might be worth a look?

Having pulled the spokes out I certainly did use Nitromors gel (green tin) painted carefully onto the lips. I applied a good coat and then agitated it a little with a brush and applied more. One trick is to place strips of paper on to it so that it does not dry off quickly. Came off completely after a second application and brushing with a nylon nail brush. Washed down well dried off overnight and then onto the preparation.

Just had a look on the plastikote website and under their functional products range (dunno what that says for their other stuff) they seem to have something called 'industrial clear acrylic' which looks suitable and further down they have something called 'metal protekt' which also sounds like what your after.
The stuff i had was the clear stuff from the 'super' range and it was really good, recommended finish from it.

Good post! Well done for having a crack! :) But, so you dont need do them it may be advisable to go for the most durable finish!

You may know I have refurbed a couple of sets recently. Upon research I decided to veer away from the Halfords lacquer (if may well be fine) and went for the Plastik clear coat "enamel" which is avialable from B&Q and is specifically for wood/metals- This I believe is slightly more durable then regular clear coat lacquer albeit it is a bitch of a sod to apply!

Looking forward to the refurb thread with pics!

Cheers, it was the Plastikote durable stuff I was thinking about! Seems to work out about the same price as the Halfords stuff anyway as you get more in the canister.

Still debating if I'm going to change the colour of the centres or not - indecisive? Me?

Ordered supplies from Merlin Abrasives yesterday, already have the socket bit to remove the bolts, got some Nitromors already, will pick up the lacquer and loctite later this week. Shame I've only got one free day in the next two weeks though so it could be a while! :(
