Lube up your nuts!

So I was looking to improve the look of my wheel nuts. They were not bad but showing signs of age.

Paint was not an option because as soon as you use a socket the paint will come off.

Replace was not an option as there was nothing wrong with them apart from appearance.

So I coated them in XCP rust blocker. It makes them deep black and stays slightly wet but not excessively. It’s been two weeks and exposed to salt with no sign of fading. Just brush on with a quarter inch brush

Fit nut caps, about £15 ebay.
These are smoke chrome.

And these are chrome.


I prefer smoked.

I did have black caps but prefer the original look.

Your chrome caps do look good though

If you are worried about your nut paint being fragile, you can buy soft sockets with nylon inner sleeves or put a bit of black tape in the socket

I forgot about XCP used it on the planes..must add it to my collection.

First time I take the wheel nuts off any car I buy they go back on with a good coat of copper slip on them and the they easy to get off every time for years.

It’s not getting them off. It’s the appearance. Also you are not supposed to put any grease on wheel bolts as it can over tighten when torqued causing it to stretch and possibly fail.

Exactly this. You can feel a stretched bolt. If they are torqued up to spec there is no issue getting them off again. The issue is that many garages seem to think that as tight as possible means the wheel won't come off.
