I'm in a similar position mines read zero for 2 years The car runs ok so I've given up worrying about it

Well that's not going to do your mpg much good, the absence of a Maf reading will cause the engine management to run on default settings so it wont be running at optimal rates regarding fuel trims. Bad Mafs don't always set engine management lights. If you do decide to replace the Maf ensure you use an oem replacement either Bosch or Seimens brands do not buy cheap pattern ones.

The OP on the other thread has tried his MAF, plus the known good one I sent him. Neither read. He also has rough idle issues and bogging down until about 3k. From my old carburettor days, bogging like that was usually due to an over-rich mixture. So are we now suspecting it could be a DME issue? Hope not, as they can't be easily swapped and unlinked from the EWS like the 6-cylinder ones can.

You may well be right to suspect the DME if known good Maf's don't register might be worth checking the wires from Maf to DME for continuity just to rule out a broken wire between the two. Bogging down is certainly a symptom of a bad Maf, had it on my 4 pot Z3, new Maf cured it instantly in my case.
