No alarm arming or flashing indicators

The reason I am asking is when I lock the car I wanted the indicators to flash confirmation on lock and unlock. I have set this as per instructions via the OBC stalk. However they do not flash. I also noted the clowns nose does not flash every two seconds after the locking.

If I sit in the car and lock it, after 60 seconds if I move, nothing happens.

So I wondering if the fact it has no alarm might be linked. Any help would be great.

I have changed the title as I intend to keep this thread updated as I go. It might help others searching

AFAIK all E89s in all markets had a combined alarm / immobiliser ..the only variations were what lights flashed when triggered etc…

Have you got or downloaded the owners manual for your car?

It has detailed instructions on your version?

Just wondered also if someone had tinkered in the coding ref this system..

By now many cars have been ‘Carlyed’

As with all BMWs if you have the clown nose under the mirror then you have an alarm. If it isn't lighting up / flashing when you lock the car with the remote probably it isn't working and there might be a fault with it.

Thank guys. I will investigate further. All locks fine but no clowns nose lighting.

I have all the manuals. Followed them but nothing so more work to do. 👍

Since you look like a ‘twiddler’ :tumbleweed:  probably best to get a decent code reader / programmer as almost everything on these E89s is ECU / sensor controlled..

I’m waiting for a dongle to arrive so I can use Bimmercode and Bimmerlink. I have found these very useful in the past. Plus you get updates and no subscription after the initial purchase.

I have Carista and this doesn’t show ant codes. Everything else seems to be working fine. I’m not going to die in a ditch over it but would be nice to have it working as it should.

You may care to look at Bimmergeeks Protool as an alternative..its probably not quite as user friendly as Bimmercode but its got much more powerful coding and diagnostic options..Android only, which for some is off putting..I just a bought cheap rugged Chinese Android phone which I used for this, MHF and xHP.

Similar one off purchase price..quality of support is excellent..

Good to know. I have owned Bimmercode and Bimmerlink for around 4 years. I just need to dongle to arrive. If I get no joy then I will certainly give it a go. Cheers.

My first port of call is to replace the battery in the car. On inspection this morning it was only holding 11.84v so that’s toast. It was a Halfords brand so I doubt it was registered to the car which will kill off a battery due to out of sync with the IBS.

Ordered a new genuine battery. £207 and a new retaining bracket as the spanner monkey that changed it didn’t bother to put it back. £13 with a new nut.

As soon as the dongle arrives I can install it and get it registered. Then I can also rule out this a problem. I did find low battery codes when I bought it but put this down to lack of use. He only did 450 miles since its last service Aug 2021.

I will post any more findings but I suspect its a module issue as nothing I set in the OBC works despite it saying saved.

If the door cards have ever been off a wire may have been damaged, the wiring on the modules inside the door card look extremely delicate around 1mm thick and I can see how they would be easily damaged if you are not extremely careful with removal

Mine works fine - never seen the 'nose' flashing in either of my zeds!!

Have you tried looking to car with the key in the door, I don’t know if it use’s different modules to the remote locking but it may help narrow down any possible faults.

All the doors, boot and fuel lock and open perfect. It’s just not arming the alarm. I’m waiting on my dongle to communicate with all the modules. If that doesn’t work I will install ISTA and look further (I will a windows laptop for this hence trying my dongle and BimmerCode first).

I will hopefully update soon

Little update. I have replaced and registered a new genuine battery. The old unit had a capacity of 66%. Registered it using BimmerLink. 👍

Then using Bimmercode check my options. The flashing indicators were disabled even the the car had them set in the OBC. All working now but still no alarm yet. More to follow

I didn't even know what that thing was for... Mine never blinks, but all the locking functions work. Now I'm really not sure my alarm system is working. Is there some place to enable the alarm?

You may actually be on to something. ISTA could not communicate with the alarm module on Terminal 15. I found the fuse 7.5amp was blown.

Replaced it and the clown nose now flashes when locked and behaves normally. However the interior is not being monitored. If I lock the car with the roof down or window open nothing will trigger the alarm. However if I jack the car the tilt switch kicks in!

Door skins off is my next job to check the DWA modules.

I will update as I go.

So finally got to do some more digging into my alarm. The only thing not working was the microwave sensors.

So took the door cards off. Passenger side all good.

Drivers side someone had been in there and pulled the wires out of the connector. That would explain the blown fuse.

Re pinned the connection and replaced the fuse again (as it blew when I touched the wires).

And….all working perfectly 😎👍

Like it when people report back..very irrating when advice is given and you never hear back..
