Windscreen poll

Following on from the shitty non-genuine windscreen thread, I’ll do my best Marlon impression and run a poll.

How many MILES do you AVERAGE between windscreen replacements.

If you have 1 car then this should be a simple calculation. If you have more than 1 car it should not be much more difficult.

Either way, total mileage / total replacement windscreens.


For example, I’ve had 6 screens in 13 years over 4 cars, but have covered ~350,000 miles thus >50,000 miles per screen

I am 52 and never replaced a windscreen in any of the cars ive owed .
Only ever had a chip repaired by autoglass some years ago.
Cant do the maths on how many miles that would be

But replacing the car when the windscreen has a chip is overkill oke:

I never changed because of a chipped screen. :lol:

But back in my 20s and 30s I always had older used cars and usually changed in less than 2 years - so many cars and so little time!

At least 50,000 miles per screen.

However I did manage to have 3 replaced in a week on a 318i many years ago.

The local fitter didn't believe me when I called for the third time in as many days.

I think the type of car you own and where you drive makes a big difference. I suffered way more windscreen damage in small hatchbacks with short bonnets than I have in any BMW I've owned (so far). I remember I used to drive near to where they were building the M6 toll when I was at uni and the state of the roads due to the construction meant wagons were always throwing stones up at my car. I remember once a rock flying towards the windscreen that was so big I saw it coming and shielded my face with my hand

I think how you drive has a lot to do with it - tailgating will get you a stone chip which may start a crack. Also if you live where there is a lot of loose sand and small stones like here in the SW US you are far more likely to chip or crack a windshield than in say the soggy NE section.

never replaced a windscreen in 12 years of driving, and then windscreens in both my daily and my z4 needed within a couple of months of each other. Just bad luck i guess... the z4 especially, i'd literally just popped out to get some petrol after barely using the car for months, and then a mile from my house a dull crack sound, and a 12 inch crack had appeared. no idea what caused it, didnt see anything!
