Wipers not working

Hi guys.

Today my wipers started randomly stopping and then wouldn't move again until I switched the car off and then back on again, then they worked fine for a while. When I got home, even when restarting the car they would not move at all.

Got home, and found the guide to cleaning the motor and have done that. However, there is still no movement from the motor (I can hear the relay clicking on and off though). Any ideas?

In the end I took it to a local garage, they said it was most likely the switch on the stalk so replaced that, but they still don't work. Apparently no power is getting to the wiper motor, so they are still looking. Lets hope it's not too expensive!

Try this previous link. Sounds like a similar prob. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1115530

I had a Audi TT and had a weird electrical fault. Spent loads at a local garage still had the fault. Didn't fancy paying Audi prices. I went to an Indy they solved the problem first time cost £150 no parts just labour. Find one local and bite the bullet. Good luck

I did that before taking the car to the garage, but it didn't solve it. There is no power getting to the motor and the relay is being very noisey so they are trying to get to that and will update me on Monday. If not, it will be off to BMW as my local indy has about a weeks wait, and wipers are kind of important lol!

This exact same thing happened to me this morning .....but its p*ssing down so wont get looked into today

Heres a link to a pic of the relays and fuses etc http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php%3Fattachmentid%3D202760&imgrefurl=http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t%3D440711&h=696&w=928&sz=150&tbnid=_OUxzwz0WZyZQM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=120&zoom=1&usg=__87zMkcKgPJvi-tOK6KkOZo2-6qI=&docid=hKpcmVOxfNX2VM&sa=X&ei=zTiWUIHsF4W_0QXUxYCYCg&ved=0CCoQ9QEwAg&dur=900

They have got to one of the relays behind the fuse box and a new one should be with them tomorrow (BMW didn't have a clue that the Z4 had a wiper relay!) so we shall see if that fixes the problem.

Can you post a pic of that relay please ?
( as far as I,m aware the wiper/washer relay is behind the glove box and theres a wiper relay in the "box" under the bonnet too)

Don't think there's anything related to wiper relays under the bonnet. They are K36 and K37 in the photo.

I don't have a picture of the relay as a garage is doing the work. But the relay they have replaced is the one shown in the picture above, located behind the fusebox (which I am told was a pain to get at!).

K36 or K37?

Both! K36 powers the whole system, K37 specifically powers the motor based on module control.

saw this problem on the SL500 earlier.. which sits idle 2werks at a time. the wipers wouldn't work so I did some Googling and it turns out its a battery power thing I think. I left the engine on for 10m and tried again and it was all ok. they did make reference to a component? called SAM.. not sure what it is though.

does your z sit unused for long periods?

Hi, sorry to jump in on an old thread but I've got this problem with my Z4. How do you get to relay k37? It's behind some moulded plastic so does that mean it's actually part of the fusebox? Doing my head in now :headbang:

I have no idea how to get it to, the garage did it! But it's a stupid place to put the relays, cost me £250 to replace a £10 relay! On any normal car you could get to it no problem.

I posted a brief summary of getting to relays behind the fuse block earlier.

£ 250.00 !! Sounds like you had a complete fusebox for that price. Been told they're 10 day order from Germany and got no wipers at all !! Anyone ever repaired a fusebox and/or relay k37 ?? Thanks for your replies guys :)

Well first they replaced the wiper stalk as they thought that was the problem, although I'm pretty sure that was working fine and it was just the relay.
