Excessive water ingress
Hey all,
Long time lurker first time poster.
About three weeks ago I had my windscreen replaced by autoglass after getting a huge stone chip in the windscreen. Ive driven it a couple of times since then but its mostly been on the drive.
I noticed that it was very damp inside and there was condensation on the inside of the windscreen. Today when pulling my passenger seat forward, i noticed a huge amount of water. As per the pictures there was a lot on the carpet.
So far autoglass have been good and have asked for me to take the car back in to check to see if the windscreen is fixed properly and offered a valet if it wasn't due to the amount of water. I have noticed that the strip that went across the too of the windscreen is no longer there but that could be due to autoglass sealing the windscreen in a way that doesn't require it
My question is if the windscreen is attached correctly, what else could it be causing this as its a huge issue.
pictures (excuse the colour of the water, i clearly need to clean my carpets more )

Wow that is a lot of water . It has to be something to do with the new windscreen not fitted correctly. In the E85s the roof drains can get blocked and thus water can’t drain out then water gets into the car and is not noticeable until you notice the carpet soaking wet. I’m not too sure if you have to clean the drains on the new G29.
BMW E89 3.5i M Sport manual, loving it….

I'm no expert on it, but surely you shouldn't have such a huge gap round the windscreen like that. Something must be missing?

Thats exactly my thoughts….
Is anyone able to take some shots of across the top of their windscreen so i can compare and show autoglass as im 99% certain there should be a seal that goes across the top and over the A frame like the attached google image but its too far away to be certain

Did they replace the seal when they fitted the new windscreen, if so was it with an OEM seal as yours looks slightly different to mine.

Very good question. It was an insurance job so not sure if they replaced anything other than than the glass. Hopefully they will know what they did. Ive learned a valuable lesson though which is to take photos before i give it to anyone other than BMW when they are doing work.

I’ve just gone out and looked at my 21 plate incase it’s any different from Swifty’s
The thing I’ve noticed is that my screen SLIGHTLY overlaps the angle of the seal (red circle) yours sits well below giving a reasonable sized gap (green circle) Your screen also seems to have a much larger angled cut in the top corner. HTH’s

Good points and I totally agree with you Andy. I just wonder if they fitted an OEM or aftermarket screen. The only thing I know is that if the car is fitted with HUD, then it has to be OEM screen, no HUD, then I believe they can supply an aftermarket screenArgyll Andy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 8:27 pm I’ve just gone out and looked at my 21 plate incase it’s any different from Swifty’s

It may well be as you say an aftermarket but that gap seems excessive compared to mine and could definitely be an explanation for the water running in as that’s a serious amount of water in the OP’s picture!

So a quick update. Autoglass took the windscreen out and re-seated it. They are confident that there was no issues with the windscreen. I have booked it in with BMW to get them to check it out.
The amount of water has returned and I'm water vacuuming it out as much as I can but its still getting in in huge amounts.
Its all very odd.

Keep us informed. It’s a very strange one and I find it almost impossible that it isn’t anything to do with the windscreen as it started after that. Maybe some drainage got blocked somehow.Itsme9484 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 4:31 pm So a quick update. Autoglass took the windscreen out and re-seated it. You have to watch these windscreen guys, my wife took her Focus in for a new windscreen a couple of years ago and although the radio was working when she went in it wasn't when she drove out with the new screen. Went back and they denied anything was wrong but she persisted and they found that the aerial wasn't fitted in properly.
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.
