Business Stereo Aux Connection

I have been trying to connect a phone to my 2007 Z4 2.0i business Stereo via the aux jack, initially tried an iPhone but only got sound out of the rear speakers (all speakers work normally). I thought that may have been because of a dodgy cable. Bought a new jack to USB C cable to connect my HONOR android phone, when plugging in you can hear the crackling as the jack goes in but when playing music I have no sound through any speakers, it just plays through the phone itself.
Does anyone have any ideas?
